Beliefs

We believe that the entire Bible is a revelation from God with the original autographs verbally inspired and without error (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21). The Spirit of God through the Bible informs us and guides us in our daily Christian walk of life.

We believe that God is personal and has revealed Himself as a Trinity in unity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 8:6; 2 Corinthians 13:14).

We believe that Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God. He is very God (100% divine). His co-equal with the Father and Holy Spirit (John 20:28). Jesus took upon Himself human nature and embodiment (100% human), being conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary (Luke 1:30-35). Jesus died upon a cross as a representative and substitutionary sacrifice for the sin(s) of the world (Romans 5:8). He arose from the dead in a glorified body (in continuity the same body in which He was crucified), made earthly appearances and ascended into Heaven where He is now reigning and interceding for His church (1 Corinthians 15:1-8; Acts 1:9-11; 2:29-36; Hebrews 4:14-16). He will come again, personally and visibly to consumate His kingdom and judge the living and the dead (Revelation 20:4-6; 11-15).

We believe that the Holy Spirit is God, co-equal with the Father and Son. The Holy Spirits glorifies and continues the ministry of the Lord Jesus Christ (John 14-16). The Spirit gifts the church and illuminates the church to understand the Scriptures (Acts 5; 1Corinthians 2:12-16; 12).

We believe that humanity was created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27) but fell into sin and death (2 Corinthians 5:12-21) and is in that sense lost. Thus, unless a person is born-again, he or she cannot see the kingdom of God (John 3). Salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8). Humankind will undergo judgment, the unbelieving wicked will experience conscioius eternal retribution and the righteous will experience the reward of eternal life (2 Corinthians 5; Revelation 20:11-15).

We beleive that the church is an elect community of believers baptized by the Holy Spirit into one body (1 Corinthians 12:13). The church is to worship God, part of which includes observing the two ordinances the Lord mandated (baptism and communion), make fully devoted followers of Christ in the context of love (discipleship, Matthew 28:19-20; 1John 4), and evangelize both near and far the lost with the good news of Jesus Christ (Acts 1:6-8). The church awaits the return of her Lord Jesus to consummate His kingdom (Revelation 20-22).

Vision & Values

Our Vision:

We envision a preferred future where people are developing into fully functioning followers of Jesus Christ through the venues of worship, educational opportunities, authentic community fellowship, and ministry opportunties.

Our Core Values

We realize there is a difference between "actual" vs. "aspirational" core values. Which is to say, some values we are actually doing, whereas others are in progress and what we are apiring to do.

Relationships: are our highest priority with God and people

Scripture: both the reading, understanding, and applicaiton of it for Christlike discipleship and life transformation

Worship: of the Triune God

Evangelization: sharing the good news of Jesus to help people find and follow Him. We are "Christianly" missional. Which is to say, we want to attract, engage, and value people of all ages, backgrounds, gender, and ethncity to Jesus Christ.

Servant Leadership and Team: we lead by serving and two are better than one.

Authencity: we value integrity in the sense that there is a congruence in what we say and what we do

Excellence in ministry: what we do, we want to do well for the glory of God in line with the gifts the Spirit has given to the church

Our History

We've been around for a while to say the least!  We were formally organized on January 31, 1877 and named the German Baptist Church of Pekin, IL. We moved to our current site in 1892.

In 1918 around the time of WW1 the church changed her name to Second Baptist Church of Pekin, IL and then in July 1930 the present name Calvary Baptist Church of Pekin, IL was selected.

Up until 1935 the church was affiliated with the Chicago Baptist Association, the Illinois Baptist Convention, and the Northern Baptist confernce. After this time, the church become an independent work.

The church has had 27 different Pastors over her prolonged history.
